About this Rhine Falls poster
The Rhine Falls (Rheinfall) are at Neuhausen am Rheinfall near Schaffhausen in northern Switzerland. The river drops about 23 metres across a width of around 150 metres, and they are often described as the largest plain waterfall in Europe by volume. A tall rock stands in the middle of the falls, and Schloss Laufen, a castle on the cliff above the south bank, has viewing platforms that reach out over the water.
In the painting
This Night Windows piece shows wide white cascades crashing around the rock pillar in mid-river, Schloss Laufen with its red-tiled roof and warm amber windows on the wooded cliff above, a lamplit wooden viewing platform at the cliff edge, mist rising from the falls, wildflowers on the near bank and a full moon among thin clouds. It is a painted, moonlit reimagining rather than a photograph of one exact viewpoint.
