Night Windows pieces are meant to feel like a window into somewhere you wish you were. Size changes that feeling: too small and the scene reads as a postcard; too large for the wall and it crowds the room. Use the distance and wall cues below, then pick the frame colour that keeps the moonlight calm.
Quick size table
| Size | Best for | Viewing distance |
|---|---|---|
| 12×18 | Desks, narrow hallways, stacked pairs, guest rooms | About 2–4 ft (arm’s length to a short step back) |
| 20×30 | Most living rooms, bedrooms above a dresser or sofa | About 5–8 ft (across a bed or seating group) |
| 24×36 | Feature walls, open loft spaces, above a long sofa | About 8–12 ft (the “stand back and look” distance) |
Room-distance heuristic
A simple rule that works well for landscape wall art:
- Stand where you will usually look at the print. Measure (or pace) that distance.
- Aim for print height ≈ ⅙ to ⅕ of that distance. At 6 ft, a 20×30 (about 30 in on the long edge in landscape, or 30 in tall in portrait) sits in a comfortable range; at 10 ft, 24×36 starts to earn the wall.
- Match the furniture, not the whole wall. Above a sofa, keep total framed width under about two-thirds of the sofa length so the piece feels anchored rather than floating.
- Leave breathing room. Leave a few inches of wall between the frame and shelves, TVs, or door frames so moonlight edges do not collide with clutter.
12×18 — intimate
Choose this when you sit close: a reading chair, a hallway landing, or a pair flanking a mirror. Detail in wildflowers and lantern windows stays crisp at arm’s length. Less ideal as the only art on a large blank wall.
20×30 — the default
The all-rounder for Night Windows. From a sofa or bed you still feel immersion without overwhelming a typical flat. If you are unsure, start here — it is the size most rooms forgive.
24×36 — the statement
Best when the room has real depth: open-plan living space, a long viewing axis from kitchen to lounge, or a bedroom with a clear foot-of-bed view. Give it a clean wall; busy gallery grids fight a large single window scene.
Frame colour notes
- Black or charcoal — keeps deep blue-green night tones cinematic; good against light walls.
- Natural wood / oak — warms alpine meadows, cabins, and heather; softens desert and Mediterranean pieces.
- White or light — rare for this series; use only on very dark walls so the night sky does not flatten.
- Gold or ornate — usually fights the mood. Night Windows already carries warm lantern light; a quiet frame lets that glow do the work.
If your room already has black metal window frames or dark furniture, match that language. If the room is oak and linen, lean wood.
Print quality honesty
Source masters for Night Windows are roughly 1024×1536 pixels (portrait) or similar landscape sizes. That is excellent for posters and mid-size framed prints. For the largest framed options (especially 24×36), results improve if the file is carefully upscaled before print so edges and fine vegetation do not soften under close inspection. We keep print masters separate from the compressed web images you see on this site.
In short: buy the size that fits the room first; for large framed pieces, expect an upscale step before the print house runs the job. Poster sizes are the most forgiving.
