Gullfoss pours in wide tiers into its misty canyon in Iceland, a turf-roofed farmhouse glowing on the rim under a full moon.

Where it fits. A wide, roaring fall for a living room, study or entryway wall, where the white water carries the light and the lit farmhouse windows add warmth. As a 4×6 ft mural the tiers and canyon mist fill the wall with the moon above.

About this Gullfoss poster

Gullfoss, “golden falls”, is on the Hvítá river in southwest Iceland and is one of the stops on the Golden Circle route with Þingvellir and Geysir. The river turns and drops in two stages, of about 11 and 21 metres, into a narrow canyon that runs away from the falls, so from the viewpoints the water seems to vanish into the earth. Plans to dam the river for power in the early 20th century never went ahead, and the falls have been a protected nature reserve since 1979.

In the painting

This Night Windows piece shows the wide tiered falls plunging into a deep, rugged canyon with spray rising, a small turf-roofed stone farmhouse with warm amber windows on the grassy rim, mossy rocks and white wildflowers in the foreground, and a full moon behind thin clouds. It is a painted, moonlit reimagining rather than a photograph of one exact viewpoint.

Where it hangs best

The artwork is a tall 2:3 portrait. The 12×18 poster or black-framed print suits a bedroom, a narrow wall or a hallway, and pairs well with Skógafoss or Kirkjufell for an Iceland wall (see the Iceland and Nordic pieces). For a feature wall, the 4×6 ft (48×72 in) peel and stick mural keeps the same portrait shape.
