Multnomah Falls pours in two tiers past the Benson Bridge in Oregon’s Columbia River Gorge, beside a glowing stone lodge under a full moon.

Where it fits. A tall, narrow fall made for a hallway, a stair landing or a reading corner, where the white water and warm lodge windows lift a darker wall. As a 4×6 ft mural the two tiers run nearly floor to ceiling.

About this Multnomah Falls poster

Multnomah Falls is in the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon, about 30 miles east of Portland, and is the tallest waterfall in the state at roughly 620 feet (189 metres). It falls in two tiers, an upper drop of about 542 feet and a lower one of about 69 feet, and the Benson Bridge, built in 1914, crosses the gap between them. Multnomah Falls Lodge, a stone building from 1925, stands at the base beside the trail.

In the painting

This Night Windows piece shows the tall two-tier fall pouring down a mossy basalt cliff, the arched Benson Bridge spanning the gap between the tiers, dark evergreen forest and ferns on both sides, the stone lodge with warm amber windows beside a lamplit path, a rocky creek in the foreground and a full moon among thin clouds. It is a painted, moonlit reimagining rather than a photograph of one exact viewpoint.

Where it hangs best

The artwork is a tall 2:3 portrait, a natural fit for one of the tallest falls in North America: the 12×18 poster or black-framed print suits a narrow wall, a spot beside the bed or a hallway, and pairs well with Yosemite Half Dome Moon or the other North America pieces. For a feature wall, the 4×6 ft (48×72 in) peel and stick mural keeps the same portrait shape.
